FOR THE LOVE OF OUR EARTH

Making mindful choices with eri silk

We believe that every individual can contribute. We believe that businesses should make profits. However, the success of a business should not be measured by profits alone, but by the contribution it makes towards meeting the basic needs of humanity at large and the impact it has on our ecological system, for future generations.

Through sustainable, cruelty-free Eri silk, we found this happy balance - we were able to create environmental, cultural, social, and economic impact.

We explored this traditional natural resource - Eri, bet on its potential in an area ridden with strife, increased its commercial viability through innovation, created employment opportunities for women, increased awareness about its sustainable properties, created contemporary products through design and colour interventions with heritage weaves, and catapulted eri to the international platform, as a sustainable choice for the polluting textile industry.

IN 2014, WE LAUNCHED EREENA WHICH SHOWCASES THE FINEST IN ERI SILK

ERI SILK IS ALSO KNOWN AS PEACE SILK

‘A silk for the soul’, the wild silk - Eri is an environmentally sound, exceptional natural fiber found predominantly in the foothills of the Himalayas in India.

Unlike other silks Eri silk comes from open ended cocoons, made by the unique semi domesticated silkworm Samia Cynthia Ricini, that allows the moth to escape, mature, and complete its life cycle. Hence it is a cruelty-free silk and often referred to as ‘Peace Silk’.

Eri silk is spun and not reeled unlike in mulberry and other natural silks, as the harvested fibers are not continuous.

The name eri is derived from the Assamese word 'Era' which Is the local name of the castor oil plant. Eri worms feed on the leaves of the drought-resistant castor plant which requires very little water for its sustenance, thus leaving a low carbon foot print.
ERI SILK IS OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE WORLD’S MOST SUSTAINABLE SILK AS IT CONSUMES A MEAGRE 0.001% OF WATER.

Eri silk has wonderful properties - uniquely comfortable to wear, versatile, isothermal & sustainable, It is an all-weather fabric with the cool comfort of cotton, the warmth of wool &the subtle elegant lustre of silk.

The team at Ereena is deeply involved at every stage of creation - from drawing the yarn in the foothills of Himalayas, to the designing, dyeing, and weaving of the fabric, to the sewing of the final product. Employing and empowering local communities all the way.
